We are excited to introduce you to MDI Coordinator, Heidi Sellner who serves the Southwest region of Minnesota.
How long have you been with MDI?
20 years in April
If you are or have farmed in the past, are you a first generation farmer or what generation are you? Who farmed in your family before you?
My husband, Loran, and I have a 200-cow robotic retrofit dairy operation between Sleepy Eye and New Ulm in Brown County. Loran is the 5th generation on our farm.
Why did you choose dairy farming for a career or what influenced your decision to be a coordinator with MDI?
I love my job with MDI! I love working with dairy farm families. I understand their challenges and how to go about helping them to achieve THEIR goals. I have learned many things through being a coordinator and have made many contacts that have been very helpful resources.
What is your favorite aspect of what you do? What do you find most satisfying about your job as a coordinator?
I love it when we can resolve a concern and get the farm family back on track and moving forward achieving the families goals.
What is your favorite dairy product or food/dish made with dairy?
I love them all! Whole milk straight from the bulk tank is my go-to when I’m stressed.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Well, Loran and I are finally “empty nesters” so right now I am enjoying not “having” to go anywhere. We enjoy our two grandchildren immensely and are looking forward to our third arriving in May. I have also gotten to enjoy going to Brookings to see our youngest. Loran and I enjoy going to Central Plains Dairy Expo which has been our vacation from the farm.
What invention/innovation/technology do you feel has been the biggest advancement in dairy farming?
Genomic testing and activity monitors. These two items have allowed dairy farms to take thing to the next level.
If you could go back in time and give yourself a good piece of advice, what would it be?
It’s ok to fail sometimes, that’s part of learning. But don’t be afraid to ask your questions and learn before making your decisions. Sometimes decisions don’t need to be made immediately, take some time and think it through.
