We’re excited to introduce you to MDI Coordinator, Jill Zieroth who serves the south central region of Minnesota which includes the counties Anoka, Carver, Chisago, Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Le Sueur, McLeod, Nicollet, Ramsey, Renville, Rice, Scott, Sibley, Washington and Wright. Jill has been with MDI over eighteen years and has her office in Cologne, MN.
Tell us about your farming background…
My husband, Jon, and I are former dairy farmers. Jon is the fifth generation of his family on our farm, which was originally purchased by his great-great-grandfather in 1877. Both of my parents grew up on dairy farms, and my parents farmed until a few years after I was born.
What influenced your decision to be a coordinator with MDI?
I started working for MDI while we were still farming, working part-time initially in an administrative position. When our region’s coordinator accepted a different job, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to move into the coordinator position and work more closely with dairy farmers.
What is your favorite aspect of what you do at MDI?
My favorite aspect of my job is meeting with dairy farmers and their teams, and seeing them work together to address challenges, brainstorm new ideas and strive to reach the goals the farmers have set for their businesses and their personal lives. It’s especially rewarding to see when those goals have been met and new goals can be set to keep the farms moving forward.
If you could go back in time and give yourself a good piece of advice, what would it be?
Look at the big picture and don’t worry about the small stuff.
What is your favorite dairy product?
My favorite dairy product is cheese. It’s great in so many recipes, and it’s just as great by itself.
What innovation do you feel has been the biggest advancement in
dairy farming?
Robotic milking has significantly changed the way people farm. It’s not for everyone, but it’s a great option for some management styles.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, playing games, and camping. I’ve seen a lot of Minnesota, but would enjoy checking out new camping locations throughout the state.
